What Is llms.txt and Should Your Website Have One?
llms.txt is an emerging (and still informal) convention: a plain-text file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt that gives AI crawlers a clear, structured summary of what a business does, in language built for machines to parse rather than humans to browse.
How it's different from a normal page
A homepage is written to persuade a human visitor. An llms.txt file is written to inform an AI system quickly and unambiguously: services offered, location, key facts, without marketing language getting in the way of a clean answer.
What goes into a basic llms.txt file
Business name and summary
A one-line, factual description of what the business does.
Services offered
Listed plainly, the way a customer or an AI system would phrase them.
Areas served
Specific towns and locations, not a vague regional description.
Key links
Services, contact and pricing pages, so an AI system can point further if needed.
Is it worth doing now?
It costs almost nothing to add, and because it's still new, very few competitors, especially local ones, have bothered yet. Whether it becomes a major ranking factor or a quiet niche convention, being early costs nothing and has no real downside.
