Will AI Search Replace Google for Local Businesses?
It's a genuinely open question, and anyone claiming certainty either way is overselling their confidence. What's clearer is the direction of travel, even if the timeline and final shape aren't settled.
What's changing
A growing share of searches, especially informational and comparison-type ones, are increasingly answered directly by AI, without a click to any website. Google's own AI Overviews sit right inside its search results now, reducing clicks to the organic listings beneath them.
What probably isn't changing soon
Local, transactional intent ("book a recovery van now," "call a car detailer today") still tends to route through Maps and traditional local search, because those searches need real-time, location-specific, actionable results: something AI chat answers aren't naturally built to replace yet.
Where AI answers help vs. where local search still wins
AI chat answers
- Good for research and comparison questions
- Often no click through to any website
- Not built for real-time availability or location
Local search & Maps
- Still the default for urgent, location-specific intent
- Reviews, distance and hours drive the decision directly
- Where most transactional local enquiries still route through
The practical approach
Don't bet everything on either horse. Traditional local SEO (Google Business Profile, reviews, local content) and AEO/GEO signals (structured data, FAQ schema, clear factual content) overlap heavily anyway, so doing both well covers the business regardless of how search evolves over the next few years.
