Website vs a Facebook Page: What's Actually Better?

A lot of local businesses run entirely on a Facebook page for years, and for some, that's fine. But it's worth being clear-eyed about what a Facebook-only presence can't do. We've picked up clients moving from exactly this setup, from a landscaper posting job photos to a competitions business that needed something customers could actually trust with a payment.

What a Facebook page is good at

It's free, it's quick to update, and if your customers are already on Facebook, posting there reaches people who already follow you. For word-of-mouth-driven local groups (community pages, local buy-and-sell groups), it can work well.

What it can't do

Facebook page only vs. a real website

Facebook page

  • Won't rank in Google search results the way a real website can
  • You don't own it: a policy change or account issue can take it away
  • Looks less credible next to a competitor with a proper site
  • No structured data, sitemap, or technical SEO to speak of

A real website

  • Shows up when someone searches the service and area directly
  • Fully owned: nothing a platform decides can take it away
  • Reads as a serious, established business to a new visitor
  • Can carry schema, a sitemap, and everything Google actually uses to rank it

For most local trades: do both. Keep the Facebook page for quick updates and community reach, but have a real website as the thing that shows up when someone searches for what you do and where you do it, because that search is where most new customers, not existing followers, find you.
