What to Do About a Bad Google Review

Everyone gets one eventually, even businesses doing everything right, whether that's a garage, a butcher's counter, or a renovation firm. What matters is how it's handled, because the review itself is only half the story: anyone reading it also reads your response.

The response that helps

Stay calm, acknowledge the specific complaint, and offer to sort it offline (a phone number, an email). Never argue in public, never get defensive, never accuse the reviewer of lying even if you think they are; future customers reading it will judge your response more than the original complaint.

A defensive reply vs. a professional one

Defensive reply

  • Argues the details in public, in front of every future reader
  • Gets personal or accuses the reviewer of lying
  • Leaves the complaint unresolved for anyone to see

Professional reply

  • Calmly acknowledges the specific complaint
  • Offers a direct way to sort it offline
  • Reads, to anyone else scrolling past, as a business that handles problems well

When it's worth disputing

  • The review is clearly for a different business (wrong name, wrong location, wrong service entirely)
  • It contains no actual customer experience: pure spam or a competitor
  • It violates Google's content policies (harassment, hate speech, obviously fake)

Genuine but harsh reviews from real customers almost never get removed just because they're unflattering. Google's policy is deliberately narrow here, and that's the right call even when it's frustrating.

The long game

One bad review buried under thirty recent good ones barely registers. The best long-term defence against any single bad review is having enough recent, genuine positive ones around it.

Worth reading alongside this getting more reviews without annoying anyone, why review count matters and our own reviews.
