Why Isn't My Website Showing Up on Google?
This is one of the most common questions from business owners with a working site that just... isn't findable. Usually it's one of a small handful of causes, most of them fixable in minutes once identified. We've inherited more than one recovery or trades site in exactly this state: looks fine, gets zero traffic, and nobody had ever checked why.
The usual suspects
Invisible site vs. properly indexed site
Not showing up
- A leftover noindex tag from a staging phase, still telling Google not to show it
- No sitemap.xml ever submitted to Google Search Console
- Thin or duplicate content Google doesn't consider worth ranking
- Renders empty for a search crawler, even though it looks fine to a person
Properly indexed
- No noindex tags left over from testing or development
- A submitted sitemap, so every page is fully discovered
- Genuine, specific content per page rather than thin filler
- Renders the same content for a crawler as it does for a visitor
How to check
Search "site:yourdomain.com" directly in Google. If nothing comes up, the site likely isn't indexed at all, which points to the noindex or sitemap issue rather than a ranking problem. Google Search Console (free) will also directly tell you if pages are indexed and flag specific issues.
Being invisible and ranking poorly are different problems with different fixes, worth confirming which one you have before assuming it's a bigger issue than it is.
