Should You Add Online Booking to Your Trade Business?
Online booking isn't universally necessary, but for anything appointment-based (a mobile valeter, a renovation consultation, scheduled servicing) it solves a specific, common problem: enquiries that happen outside business hours.
The problem it solves
A customer browsing at 9pm who wants to book isn't going to call; the business is closed. Without a booking option, that intent just evaporates by morning, when they've often already found someone else. A booking widget captures that moment instead of losing it. We rebuilt exactly this for SL Detailing, moving them off a shared Google Calendar and onto a proper system that confirms bookings and notifies the owner automatically.
Tools that make it easy
- Google Calendar integration: simple, free, works well for solo operators, at least until it starts to strain
- Calendly or similar: more features, still low cost, good for multiple staff/services
- Built into the site directly: most seamless, but needs proper setup to sync availability
When it's not worth it
Emergency or highly variable work, like recovery or urgent repairs, doesn't really fit a booking calendar, since the whole point is immediate response. For those, a fast call button still beats booking software every time.
No booking option vs. online booking
No booking option
- An out-of-hours enquiry just evaporates by morning
- Customers have already found someone else by the time you open
- Every booking needs a phone call during business hours
Online booking
- Captures the moment of intent, any time of day
- Confirms the slot instantly, no back-and-forth needed
- Frees up time otherwise spent on booking admin
